Unique Bas Relief Sculpture inspired by Indiana Jones
What is Bas Relief?
To start talking about bas relief we must first know what relief (in sculptural terms) means.
BUT first ... who are we?
We’re Pal Tiya International and sculpting is what we know and love! We’ve got decades of experience in design and film and have sculpted with every medium on the planet … no joke!
We created Pal Tiya Premium, a versatile weatherproof clay for outdoor sculpture that is non-firing (easy to cure), and gorgeous to use because we wanted artists of all skill levels to be freed up creatively.
Relief Sculpture
Depending on the degree of projection of the sculpted form from the field, there are different names given for the degrees of relief. The Italian and French terms are still sometimes used in English.
Relief Sculpture – From the Latin verb "relevo", to raise
A sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material.
High Relief - "alto-rilievo"
The forms will project at least 50% or more of their natural circumference from the background. In some areas, they may be completely disengaged from the ground.
Low Relief Sculpture- basso-rilievo
The plane is only very slightly lower than the sculpted elements creating a 3D appearance.
Bas Relief Definition
This is exactly the same as a low relief yet often the French terms is used … bas meaning “low”.
In this case we’re using Pal Tiya Premium as our medium of choice and showing you one of the easiest ways to get started making unique yet simple bas relief art.
One evening after watching Indiana Jones for the millionth time, we thought, what a great idea for a garden sculpture. What better way to do it than to create mini bas relief wall art. We made our base for our bas relief tile using an old piece of wood, you can use thick cardboard if you like. Building up our shapes (our relief) we used tinfoil.
Low relief sculpture like this one can be done easily and as you’ll see from our video below (two versions for variety), you can make it look any way you like easily, add any texture and after it cures, pop it outside.

Bas relief sculpture is fun to do. Choose a film you love and make some art from it. Stick it on the wall outside your front door, pick a spot in the yard, gift to a friend, sell.
The possibilities truly are endless…
