How to Make a Puppet Cheaply That Will Look Expensive
How to make hand puppets that are easy and cheap but look expensive can be challenging, but we here at Pal Tiya International are always up for a challenge!
So, who are we and why should you read on? We’re the Pal Tiya International Crew. Between us we’ve been sculpting for decades and have used every sculpting material on the planet. We just love tin foil. It’s pretty inexpensive, it’s easy to get and it makes for quite a sophisticated sculpting material. We’re all about making art accessible and we wanted to show as many people on the planet how to use this versatile material to create just about anything. Every armature used for almost all of our outdoor sculpting projects use crushed tinfoil as a base. These puppets weren't designed for the outdoors, but they're a great way to get familiar with sculpting in tinfoil :) |
Most of our customers around the world make heavy duty tin foil armatures for their sculptures when using our all-weather permanent sculpting medium Pal Tiya Premium. We thought it would be fun to do a little something different whilst using all the same techniques we use to make our armatures.
So here’s all the puppet making supplies you’ll need to make your own puppets that will delight you and anyone who sees them. Believe us, we made a few, and every time anyone comes into our studio these days, the colorful diy hand puppets are the first thing they gravitate towards.

When thinking about puppet making, we of course looked to the master Jim Henson (we’re a big fan) and animal puppets came to mind 😊
We love Dragons and Goblins and we wanted anyone to be able to make cheap hand puppets that looked incredible!

We hope you’ll find this Puppet tutorial engaging and fun. We sure had heaps of laughs making this and … ok, we’ll admit to playing around with these on zoom calls too! We may have some footage of this in future …
How 6-year-old Stella was inspired to make a puppet called Pink Rainbow
"My brother and I attended a Weta Workshop tour on Wednesday, where he mentioned his six year-old niece (my daughter, Stella) was fixated on making a dragon out of a McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets box. You pointed us to your dragon tutorial, and she spent the next two days designing, building, and decorating her first dragon puppet. Obviously, the adults dealt with the hot glue, but the end product is all hers, and she is over the moon about it...This kid is obsessed with creating - for Christmas all she wanted (and received) was a fully-stocked art trolley. Thank you for your enthusiasm and insight last week, and particularly for helping us find a new way to nurture her creativity.
This is “Pink Rainbow”. She’s not too bothered with symmetry, but is all about her bling. Stella, my six-year old, worked incredibly hard on her, and parades her around for all visitors. We didn’t have to purchase a single item to make Pink Rainbow - all adornments are from Stella’s prized art trolley. Thank you for letting us share her with you, and for the fantastic online tutorials and sharing the passion for your art."
