Simple Sculptures: Make Your Own Elegant Diatoms
Who are we?
We're the crew from Pal Tiya International, and sculpting is what we care about. Between us, we've sculpted for decades and used every sculpting material on the planet (no joke). We created Pal Tiya Premium, a versatile weatherproof clay for outdoor sculpture that is non-firing, and gorgeous to use.

Simple Sculptures can sometimes look the most challenging.
We had been working away on a couple of projects: a private commission that one day we hope to share with you and another sculpture proposal.
We had some leftover Pal Tiya Premium, which had been mixed with a white iron oxide, and we didn’t want to waste it … so....

Diatoms should be the most revered form of life. Their bodies literally and physically create
most of the life on Earth. These microscopic plankton produce up to 50 percent of all our world’s oxygen, account for 1/2 of the biomass of the oceans, and are responsible for a significant percentage of the land itself. They are humble and beautiful, complex and foundational. Their breathtaking crystal glass shells are architectural wonders equalling the great ancient churches of Europe. |
We were astounded when we discovered that diatoms, as well as being such a joy to make, are an easy sculpture to make!
When it comes to simple sculpture projects, hands down, these are the simplest we have come across making with Pal Tiya Premium.

"Pal Tiya (Premium) is a dream to work with. Easy to sculpt and the best part is no firing in a kiln!" - Jeanne Grip
"I'm absolutely in love with Pal Tiya Premium! I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to start working with it. I enjoy it so much I'm considering using this medium as the only medium I use from here on out! Thank you Pal Tiya!" - Glenda Bartel, Michigan |
How does Pal Tiya Premium work?
You mix the powder with water to create a cookie-dough-clay-like mixture and apply it to your tinfoil armatures. Do I need to bake or fire it? Nope, Pal Tiya Premium cures under plastic with moisture? Where can I learn more? Get started here |
Pal Tiya Premium is an extremely strong, all weatherproof, exciting to use, totally versatile sculpting medium.
Compared with other methods for outdoor sculpture, it is also an affordable way to make small to large outdoor sculptures that will last! |
Not only are the elegant to look at, they are such an easy sculpture to achieve with very little tools.
You can literally grab any old thing from around the house: an upturned bowl; a takeaway container; your own form made from tinfoil; or like us, an old lampshade, which worked spectacularly!

We hope you enjoyed the article. Our imaginations went wild when we did an online search prior to this project. Try searching diatoms for yourself … we’re certain you’ll be itching to come up with your own designs.

If I'm honest it looked like a lot of work was involved and kept questioning myself if I could do it all the time and was super worried that I wouldn't be able to do detail with it. I mixed a bit as a test and at first thought oh gosh this feels amazing and after just playing around will a ball off it and putting into diff shapes just to get the feel of it, that gave me the confidence to actually take the plunge.
Oh boy how silly did I feel then as it was an absolute dream to work with..."
